I wasn’t alone in hankering for more high fashion cosplay, as I found out while scrolling through Instagram one day. Cowbutt Crunchies and JediManda also were similarly inspired after the 2019 Met Gala.
They discussed creating an unofficial Met Gala style event for cosplay, set to debut at Katsucon in 2020 with the theme of “Royal”.
While I’m still deep in hiatus for the time being, you know me. I can’t help but plan and design and draw. So I scratched that itch to prevent falling back down the cosplay rabbit hole, and maybe if life keeps smoothing out, I can debut this at Costume Con Montreal later in 2020.
Meet Mara Sov, Queen of the Awoken from Destiny 2 Forsaken. (Year-old spoiler alert).
- Gareth Pugh
- Royal Black Corsetry
- Futuristic polygonal fashion
- King George IV
Not royal enough. Not royal enough. Better. Too flowy, not close enough to the original design.
It’s hard to tell what kind of purple Mara Sov is actually wearing. Every image I see is in different lighting. I think aiming for textures within a single colour family of purple would be easiest, so I went with ‘plummy’ and looked through Mood, Cosplay Fabrics and aliExpress for textures and patterns that suited what I was going for.
In contrast to the overwhelming purple of the fabrics, I want the primary detail colours to be black, gold and iridescent blue we can see on the bugle beads below.
I’ll probably post more stuff when I settle on a final design. I’m almost there, but not quite satisfied yet.
Thanks for indulging me,
